THE CHALLENGE PRESENTED TO SUN by Intel's Itanium processor and the steady growth of x86 multiprocessor systems has led the company to move into new ground. It has announced that it will be producing chips with multiple cores using a simpler architecture.
The idea is to put many simple processors onto a single chip. Multiple processors on a chip is not new, IBM has been doing it for a while and Intel's Hyperthreading is a superficially similar concept. However, the scale of Sun's idea is a different matter.
