THE CHIP INDUSTRY isn't in good shape, even if US trade body the Semiconductor Indiustry Association keeps talking things up.
A report on the Bloomberg wire said that Chartered Semi, a Singapore based foundry, and the third biggest after Taiwanese firms TSMC and UMC, will shut its fabrication plant, Fab 1, as soon as next month, lay off 500 people, and concentrate on leading edge chip technology.
Its CEO, Chia Song Hwee, said that there's no sign of a recovery in chip demand while PCs continue to show clear signs of decline.
That was underlined by the president of Elpida, a firm which makes DRAMs, who said that prices of memories will continue to fall, in an interview with nikkei.net.
