RANDOM CRASHES AND SAFE or reliable but vulnerable, the choice was yours if you were running Windows NT4 up until a few hours ago. Microsoft has just withdrawn a patch for the ageing but widespread operating system after users discovered the fix caused more trouble than it was worth.


The patch was designed to kill a security vulnerability on Windows NT4, 2000 and XP. It was possible for a malicious user to gain privileges on a machine they had logged into by using inter-process communications, in particular WM_TIMER. However, the patch proved to be a dangerous thing to install on NT4.
