Too much competition
JAPAN'S Hitachi has decided that there is too much competition in the computer industry and has decided to stop making most of its consumer PCS.
The company, which already outsources production of business computers to HP, said it will continue to sell those products but will not develop PCs for the consumer market.
According to
Reuters, Hitachi wants to focus its resources on televisions with PC functions or PCs that can show television programmes.
It still thinks that the production of special business-use computers, such as ones without hard disks, still has legs, but the consumer market is blighted with too much competition from foreigners including Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and Acer.
Hitachi helped pioneer PC development in Japan but has been seeing a decline in shipments ever since they peaked at about 700,000 units in 2001.
