Fujifim experiments with one terabyte holodisk
Attack of the TerrorBites

JAPANESE FIRM Fujifilm is experimenting with material for hologram disks which have the potential to store up to one terabyte (TB of data. )

According to the Nikkei Business Daily, data will be retained as interference patterns embedded in the disk layer.

The newspaper said that Fujifilm is playing with materials using photopolymers and organic pigments. But the breakthrough, if it comes off, isn't too far away. The paper said product may be available as soon as 2009. The hologram approach overcomes physical limitations on disk sizes using pits rather than interference patterns.
