C|Net have a quote from Bernard Ourghanlian, technical and security director at Microsoft France, confirming that "there will be a Service Pack 3 for Windows XP."
Amidst Microsoft PR efforts to reassure the public at large that their attentions are focused solely on Windows XP, the confirmation strikes quite an interesting note. Windows XP SP2, and the wide array of security fixes and updates that it included, are widely blamed for the delay of Windows Vista. Ourghanlian made it clear that Vista, the next version of Windows, is "the priority for the development teams".
Microsoft have not made clear what will make it into a SP3 for Windows XP, expected out after Vista's release in late 2006. Microsoft have previously promised to back port elements of Windows Vista to XP (graphics components, for example).
The company can ill-afford to neglect previous versions of Windows, due to their wide install base and the often long 'upgrade-lag'. Whilst one might not expect fundamental changes to XP with SP3, one can be sure of one thing : security updates. Check back soon for more SP3 coverage at Neowin.
