At this time in the USA there is a lot of rumor about the government "sweeps" of illegal file transfers and "IP monitoring". This is nothing more than what we call here "spinning" the issue. The RIAA and others (bought politicians) are putting out these rumors, to try to put a stop to these activities. They are failing miserably. In America the government is coming apart at the seams in trying to deal with last years cowardly attacks, and does not have the resources or inclination to stop this. First, a judge would have to issue a warrant to get any info at all from your ISP. The ISP is not keen to do this because, that customer is paying the ISPs bills, and EVERYBODY is doing this. Then after they sat there for awhile and tried to decipher what was going across the network, ( for 1 person or FTP) they would need another warrant to enter into your house. The scale here is prohibitive. The people who run the government also claim to be winning the war on drugs (pot) also, yet you can buy rolling papers at every gas station or 7-11 from sea to shining sea. Something is not right here. Before the government gets down to the basic FTPer they have to bust: counterfeiters, crackers, groups, couriers (in addition to the massive worldwide hunt for our enemies) and so on and on. I have been searching for any evidence at all that they are doing this (going after indivduals) and can find none. Please...no more unsubstantiated rumors.

hope this helps

Zo

*edit*

It would behoove the RIAA and others to embrace the "peer to peer" model as this is what the people want. Bruce Springsteens new album has basicaly gone into the crapper, because people dont want $15-20 CDs anymore, they want only that which they choose, and want to get it on the internet, for a lot less than $15-20.good day

well...people use the rollling papers for other stuff.
homemade cigarrettes...etc.

I'm willing to bet the major ISPs will play nice w/ federal officials. Especially the ones that have a stake in the recording/movie industry, namely AOL Time Warner...which owns.....god knows how many record labels and film studios. They (Roadrunner, owned by Time Warner/AOL) did a sting not to long ago in Maine about people running warez servers. I dont know what came of that though.

Maybe Springsteens album went to the crapper...cuz it sucked.
And well...geez..he is REALLY old.

@Jessica

The people in Bruce Springsteens generation, in addition to being the wealthiest generation EVER, bought over 150 million of B.S.s albums. He is only 52 years old. maybe to you that is "real old" but to me (52) he is a peer. If you believe those rolling papers are for homemade cigs, come down here to Florida, I have some land you might be interested in. (actually land down here in FL. is going thru the roof, pricewise)

Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything. 14% of people know that.
