Hi,

I have a question about my router. I have a NetGear RP-614 router. When I am downloading a file using mIRC and the speeds are fast, I mean like over 200kbps, sometimes XP will freeze up on me. It only happens using mIRC, I can d/l other stuff at high speeds with no problems. After I restart after a freeze, everything works fine again.

My questions are these: Is this a common problem with routers? Are there better routers than NetGear that can handle the fast cable speeds?

Thanks

I had the same problem, i ended up having to create static routes for mIRC in the router firewall.

net gear is not the best of routers. linksys or a pc-linux based routers are better.
DoG has the best solution.

MK, I had a weird problem with my NetGear 614 router. It suddenly slowed down my internet transfer rate. I thought is was the ISP, but the tech convinced my otherwise and I connected the modem to my main pc and voila. I hooked up my back up router, a Belken and it was fast. Then I updated the firmware in the netgear. I hadn't done it in the past because there was always an error. Finally, I restored factory defaults and it upgraded. AFter that it returned to normal speeds. I use www.toast.net/performance to check speed.

Make sure you've got the laterst firmware.

Before I upgraded the firmware I was getting thruput rates half what was availble from my IsP.

I bought Net Gear, gave away my D-Link and LinkSys because I thought NG was better. I do like my Belkin, but keep it just as a back up.
