Well, I have a 48x cd rom, but all of a sudden, its only burning at about 6 speed or so...I have a few burning proggies on my system, Nero, Roxio, etc, just like we all do, but this is something very annoying..
I am using sp2 rc2 2149, with xp pro...

tons of ram, 3.2ht p4, so its nothing to do with any of that..
I know there is a fix for this, but I cant remember what it is..

HELP!!!

TIA,
wase4711

Try going to device manager and checking the properties of your primary and secondary IDE controllers. If any of them says PIO mode, they need to be set to DMA mode. If you can't get it to change and stay that way you can delete your primary and secondary channels, re-boot and it will pick them up again.

Maybe it's the media, I know that the CDs that I've been buying will only burn at 16X without errors.

Try this:

Open "My Computer"
Right Mouse Click the drive in question
Click the "Recording" tab
Make sure that the check box is ticked and select "Fastest" in the drop down menu.

I read somewhere that IMAPI sometimes fubar's your drive write settings.

The clue must be "all of a sudden". What have you added/removed? Is this a new batch of blank CDRs?
