I've got to update a friends bios , but i can't fit the flash utility and bios file on the win98 startup disc. Is it possible to put the flash utility and file on a second disc and after booting off the startup disc swop them over and flash the bios?.

Thanks
Stumuzz

No, you don't want to use a boot disk that loads anything at all. You should always use a "clean" bootdisk with system files only.
Command.com
Io.sys
and msdos.sys only.

You could also do it from a HDD

Just to let you all know, I used Le Cactus' idea which was boot with the win98 startup disc and at the (a switch floppies. worked like a charm.
Thanks everybody.

Stumuzz.

Anything on the start-up disk other than the 3 files listed above risks the "flash" and you will have to pop out the bios chip and replace it. Biggest culprits are autoexec.bat and config.sys. You want a boot with NOTHING loaded.

OK, you people are right (of course). I stand corrected!

Make that "Yes, no probs there. Boot (press F5 and choose Save mode command prompt) - Swap - Flash - Reboot "

Cheers!

Zonko and Dave are correct - only the three files necessary to boot should be on the disk - but glad to hear it all went well!
