My roommates computer is running XP home. All the time it is on, the harddrive is constantly spinning. You can hear it, like it's reading information or something. I looked to see if the indexing service is on, but it's turned off.

Any ideas why it is constantly running?

Thanks.
Indy

Might also be because you have the minimum amount of RAM. Also an indexing service turned on, or Microsoft scanning your had drive

I turned off "Compact Messages..." in Outlook Express, and also turned off Indexing for the searches, and still there is disk activity every 4 or 5 secs. when nothing is going on. The only annoying thing about it is the disk drive never 'sleeps'. Oh well, just minor annoyance, just like the damned Windows Explorer losing it's size and view settings randomly!

I will try the outlook fix, but he doesn't use it. As far as I know, it's never been opened.

I will also put the hdd monitor on and see what's going on. Thanks for all the replies, this gives me something to work on for a while.
