Win XP SP1 Crashing when transfering files

Anyone else come across this problem before? I can browse each machine with the other, have internet sharing setup through the WinXP machine with out a problem.
As soon as i try to transfer files from the XP machine to the 98 machine the XP machine restarts its self.
Going to turn BSOD's back on but can't risk a file transfer again as the XP machine contains my mail server etc.

hmmmm

what kind of nic do you have in the xp box dog? try updating the drivers for it, otherwise, i'm not sure, have you tried mapping a shared folder on the 98 machine as a drive letter on the xp box and copying it through a drive letter instead of a network share and see what happens?

It's a Realtek Nic card- works perfectly for transfering files elsewhere on the network, just not to the Win 98 machine.

PS. I downloaded and applied all the updates from the windows update site, restarted the machine and when it boots up now it tells me "It is now safe to turn your computer off" A great operating system indeed!!

What file system on the XP? Although I am not sure that could come into play

I guess it's irrelevant now as your 98 box looks like it's not even letting you completely log in

Its NTFS on the XP system, not sure if it would make a differenced with XP reading and writing to either

It sounds like a network glitch , I have had the situation where a transfer occasionally stops and the error comes up that the share drive is no longer available but no outright PC shutdowns , most of the time I can successfully transfer any files around my network , the file system on the host/share PC seems irrellevant , I have 95/98 and XP machines all connected most of the time.

Is the crash caused when you send files from the xp box , or use the 98 machene to read remotely.
Does it crash every time you try , or is this a rare fault.

You could try initiating the transfer from the other console to see what happens. In all the crashes I have had here I have still not lost any critical data (touch wood )

The crash happens when ever i try to send files from the XP machine to the 98 machine and it happens every time. I havent set the XP machine up for file sharing, simply because its attatched to the internet and sometimes it's neccesary to run with the firewall down.

I kind of thisk it is a problem with the win 98 machine...

What net card do you have in that machine ?

If it is a realtek, then you need to check this article at MS out...

Most of the time, it will be a 98 machine that is the trouble when you are using Inet sharing, and ntfs, and especialy if you use a realtek card in the 98 machine...

Just an Idea...

Many thanks, on checking the article it seems that i had one of the affected drivers. Will be updating that before i send the machine out. It's been sat here since i noticed the problem
