WE HEARD AS LONG ago as 2001 that Sun was actively talking to AMD about including some of its 64-bit processors into future products.
More recently, one of our reporters heard Sun Microsystem engineers chatting about AMD Opteron chips in a kitchen salesroom in leafy Surrey.

Now EB News has published an article which further looks for the AMD smoking gun in some of its blade products.

We wouldn't be surprised. After all, computer vendors are still caught in the peculiarly futile "my enemy's enemy is my friend" argument.

As Sun's enemy is definitely Intel, this lets AMD be Sun's friend.

AMD will release its first Opterons on April 22nd next in New York City, but the firm is anxious to damp down any speculation about which big vendors might, or might not adopt these chips in their products.

Different rumours have suggested at one time or another, or sometimes at the same time, that Dell, HP, IBM and Sun Microsystems might all give the chips the boost they need to enter the server market fully-blown.
