Hi,

I'm now using Redhat Linux 8.0. Current Kernel version I think is 2.4.18. I am looking for a easy or simple way to go about updating the kernel to a higher version. I believe that *might* help with some the problems I am having concerning connecting to the internet and hearing sound from my sound card.

So if anyone can provide an easy, step-by-step guide on how to update the kernel, I'd appreciate it a lot.

Thanks in advance,

TCM

Dunno. But, the 2.6 kernal should be out soon. Shouldn't one of major distros incorporate it? On the other hand, we still haven't seen 2.5 incorporated.

I believe that is because the 2.5 series of the Linux kernel is for development and testing only. When all is said&done and fixed and tweaked, it'll be released as version 2.6..........thats what I heard anyways.

RedHat 8.1 &Mandrake 9.1 will quite possibly sport this new build....perhaps other distros as well. Both RH and Mandrake are in beta stages of their next releases, respectively 8.1 and 9.1. I e-mailed Mandrake and they said they expect Mandrake 9.1 final to be released in esrly April.

I was also hoping to download KDE 3.1 for Redhat 8.0, so I went to KDE's website for more info and found out packages for version 3.1 for RedHat 8 should be made available on Feb 15th....one week from today.

There is a kernel How-To at www.tldp.org. That should help you get your kernel up and running.

Isn't one available on the RH up2date? Try running the command up2date in a terminal.

Well 2.6 kernel afaik has a long way to go. But you can just use up2date on command line and it will give you all available updates. Its only 2-3 clicks to update all software.
