Xandros&MS Broadband Networking

Hey guys,

How would I go about setting up my MS Broadband Networking to work with Xandros Desktop 1.0. For those unaware of what this is, its a linux distro(and a very pretty&user friendly one, I might add). All I've got connected is my wireless network adapter via USB. On WinXP it works fine(finally got XP&Xandros to dualboot), but on Xandros, it doesn't detect it for some reason. Will I need WINE to make the Windows driver CD work for Xandros? And if so, can someone point me to the latest version of WINE that would work for Xandros.

Anyways, if ALL ELSE fails, what other Linux Distro WOULD work with MS Broadband networking? And is it as pretty/user friendly as Xandros is??

I also Run Windows XP and Xandros (nice Distro isn't it?), but not Microsoft networking, I believe the problem lies in the USB part, you have to mount usb to get it to detect, it doesn't plug and play like windows does.

I'm not entirely certain thats the answer but I think it is

I'm pretty new at linux, I think you can look for the automounts for the CDrom and flopy that the Xandros creates and modify them to point to the usb device and load that into the lilo file so that the USB in auto mounted.

of course I could be talking out of my ass right now and wouldnt know it.

No. USB is Plug 'n Play in Linux.

Do you have the correct modules loaded to use the device? At the command prompt do "cat /proc/devices | grep usb". If anything is printed on the screen that means USB is working. Otherwise you will have to reconfigure the kernel. Go to www.tldp.org and search there for help on how to configure the kernel sources.

Guys, I just installed mandrake linux 9.1 beta 3 over Xandros cuz I wanted to see what that was like. But how do you log into the thing properly? It comes to this black screen where u enter your username and password, and I do all that but it still doesn't log me in. it gives me another blank that I have to type something for or enter. What else do I need? What else should I be doing?

What is MS Boradband networking?

I have Xandros installed and it works very well on my MS LAN, running through a 4 port switch in a Linksys wireless router. I have 5 pc's on the LAN, 2 running Xandros. They all run great. I do not have a Xandros running wireless.

Perhaps MS Broadband network is something I don't know anything about.

As far as installing mandrake "over" Xandros, I have done the same thing, but install it as a new install, reformatting the Linux partitions with Mandrake's setup stuff.

All I want now is a Linux desktop that WILL work with a wireless USB adapter. I'd prefer one of the mainstream distro's like Xandros, Mandrake, Redhat, Lindows, etc. Anyone have ANY friggin idea how to mount/setup linux to work with a wireless USB adapter? Someone out there has the knowledge and isn't sharing. oh, and PLEASE make it simple for me. No complicated, long, boring instructions. Thankx

Have you tried Mandrake? I believe that this is the best distro for newbies. It has everything you need and configure 90% of the hardware correctly.

I've tried and like Mandrake, and preferred it over all the others I've tried, but I found Xandros easiest of all--at least for old time Windows guys, like myself. It configures much easier and leaves much less to the user to do. I haven't tried to install my USB wireless adaptor which I have on a wireless laptop, because Xandros doesn't confgure on a Toshiba 5100 Satelite laptop. The problem with the Tohiba 5100 Satelite seems unique to it. Xandros installed on a Sony no problem.

TCM, if you haven't been reading the Xandros Forum (on their web site), you should. I have seen items about wireless adaptors there.
