Everytime I install dx9 (the latest) I start getting a bunch of memory dumps and have to use system restore to go back to dx 8.1 before it will boot. M$ has done it to me again.

Hey James;
run msconfig, and look for an entry called "dumpreg-k", or something like that; if it is checked, UNCHECK it, reboot, and see if that fixes it!
Good Luck!

Hey James,
are you using the latest video drivers for your graphics card?
some driver versions are notorius for not getting along with DX9..
Just a suggestion, but it sound like you finally got that bad boy humming!
