hi all... i just came across an idea in the Eazywarez board by a guy named Halldor777. seems good if implemented properly... This is what he suggested, but in my words ->

Basically it's like forming a ring of FTP servers, the access shared only between its members, never traded to outsiders. Sure many people are doing it... but with the resourcefulness of each member, the ring could be a big depleter of the billions that the software industry makes

Each member have full leech access to other members' server. As stated, access is restricted ONLY for those within the fellowship of the ring (heh can't resist that one). There has to be some sort of guidelines that members have to adhere to. For example:

-all members must use ICQ or other messenger proggies specially for the ftp ring
-servers must be up 24/7
-must have a predetermined minimum limit of files served
-must be active in the search of new stuffs
-must vow to keep holy access secret or face fatal punishment
-must notify all members if ftp going down
-must be FAST!

i dunno, those are the ones on top of my head.

So, what do you guys think? Stupid, Brilliant, or Worthless Sh*t Spewed By A Drunk?

IF this has been done and is old news, then forgive me for my blatant ignorance n stupidity

It sound's like a good idea to me
I will imidiately shut down access to my server, for people not fully able to follow these guidelines

Nah, just kidding...
Most of this is OK ( my [b:56f90f40d8]private[/b:56f90f40d8] users follow this ),
but what about all the people not able to run a fast server 24/7 ?

Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything. 14% of people know that.

Hi modD. That was basically my idea as well. Except I called it a "Pyramid" distribution scheme. If you reread my Thread called "CrowDirt's Server" you will find more details there. So it's now "FTP Sysops Unite". Count me in. Judging by the haphazzard way FTP Servers are used now on the board, it has not been done before here.

that was just a suggestion... and i don't think it's a good one

i think the servers don't need to be fast 24/7, but they have to be up regularly. not once a week or so...

Hi modD, I expect getting something like this "off the ground" will take some time. The process will need quite a few "Reliable Servers" in place to form a basis to work from. After that its a question of how to get stuff "Distributed" to folks. Large CD sized items are a real problem for the 56er's, as BearCat has pointed out. A 56er was asking about this kind of thing in another Thread a day or so ago. You will find comments from me scattered among several Threads over the last while. Lots of convincing and selling to do.

What do you call "Fast"? It sounds like most of us have the basic broadband with limited upload speed but, still faster than 56k.

ya know, the more i think about this, the more i feel it defeats the purpose of 'sharing with everyone'. it's like the people in the ring will seperate themselves with the other users who don't have the luxury of broadband or other criterias.

well i don't know. the practicality(?) of it is slowly slipping from my mind

I really don't like this idea

I'm here since a long time now

I respect the rules of the FTP members but I can't have an ftp here because my connection is only 56k and I have no other choice

I live about 5 miles to the city where they have access to ADSL

But not me

Really not a good idea for me

Hey I like the idea but my only concerns is for the 56ker's after all I was once a 56ker my self so I know what it like can you beleve I download Maya 4 using a 56k modem along with Gozilla not that it made that much of diference the idea sounds fly, I could sit infront of this PC for months and could not come up with an idea for the 56k users the ony thing I could think of is upgrade and that is not possible for guyz like Bads 1
