According to HKEPC, AMD is considering letting its partners decide upon the fate of the Radeon HD 3850 X2 cards, and as we've already seen Asus experiment with a HD 3850 X3 card (

According to the article, AMD is looking for a card to compete in the US$299-375 market, as this is the current marketplace for the 8800GTS. However, AMD doesn't seem too keen to foot the bill when it comes to R&D of such a card, and this is why the company is hoping that its partners will come up with their own products.
