i have a alcatel usb modem on adsl connected and also a elsa fun 56k modem ,also usb.i need the fun for faxing yet i cannot get it to work in device manager i only have 2 com port 1 and 2 yet in device manager for the fun usb it says it is using com 3. how to i enable com3 as com 1 and 2 are being used.(what type of items would be using these two com ports) i hope this was explained so that you can understand it.

Dave is an unknown quantity at this point
Not sure why com port 3 isn't working for you, it's usually fine for a modem. Make sure your driver is loaded.

Com 1 and 2 are usually reserved for your serial ports, if your not using them you can try disableing one in your BIOS then remove the modem from device manager and it might go into com 2.

Com 1 and 3 are the same prt and so is com 2 and 4. A modemm should work just fine on com3. Mine is on com4.
