AMD Catalyst will take over your system
Central command, Daamit

IN AN INTERVIEW given to ExtremeTech this week, DAAMIT's Phil Rogers has revealed that the company is looking to increase the scope and utility of Catalyst Control Center (CCC) far beyond its function as a graphics driver.

Enthusiasts have roundly criticised ATI for CCC, complaining that it's too slow, too clunky and overly bloated. Some of these problems were solved with a rewrite of the system earlier this year that increased performance, but many ATI gamers are still miffed.

But far from backing away from CCC and moving to a sleeker method of driver interfacing, it seems the Red and Green Team is looking to do more with it.

Says Rogers: "Longer term our goal is continue to improve the user experience and to move towards a single or central user interface where AMD customers can configure the majority of AMD product settings... It is our goal and vision to eventually have a single UI for all AMD products (graphics, CPU, chipset), but this is of course a major project, and it will be quite some time before we're able to release such a product."

Scary stuff.

Obviously this will mean that the look and feel of CCC will change heftily - branded more green than red - but it will also increase scope and complexity just as users are asking for just the opposite. Will the Center become a useful operations hub or an unbearable bloatfest? The jury is still out, but if anyone inside AMD's driver team wants to lend their thoughts, they can reach out at the usual address.
