Microsoft: XP SP1 "Within 10 Days"
By Visentinel
Wednesday, Aug 28, 2002 at 7:41 PDT

Originally expected today, and then delayed until the end of this week, Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) will now ship within ten days, according to Microsoft. The software giant announced the delivery schedule late Tuesday in an effort to comply with part of its proposed settlement with the US Department of Justice (DOJ), which specifies a time table for delivering compliance changes. These changes are part of SP1, Microsoft says.

XP SP1 includes Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1), support for USB 2.0, a number of security and bug fixes, along with the new Set Program Access and Defaults UI component, which was required by Microsoft's DOJ settlement proposal. Set Program Access and Defaults lets users choose whether to hide certain XP middleware applications, including Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, and Microsoft's Virtual Machine for Java. Third party applications can register with the UI and have their icons appear in a list of available middleware applications. This will let users choose which applications appear in the XP UI, Microsoft says.

Furthermore, XP SP1 will usher in the release of two new XP versions, XP Media Center Edition, which will power new Media Center PCs, and XP Tablet PC Edition, which are designed for a new generation of portable computers that can be used with a stylus and active digitizer screen. XP Media Center will be available only with a new HP PC in the US, while a variety of PC makers will release Tablet PCs in the coming months.

XP SP1 will be made available as a free download for existing XP users. Starting in October, all retail XP packages will be switched over to SP1 versions so that new buyers get the updates immediately.

Been on #winbeta and there's a guy who claims to get an oem newsletter. Anyway, he says sp1 will be on windowsupdate on sept. 5th. So perhaps the wait won't be as long for us to get it. Doesn't it usually take a while for things to be put up on windowsupdate after they are released initially? Hope we can get it soon. Heading out of town for the holiday on Friday.

h34r:" class="inlineimg" /> I did install a few of the beta releases from 1065 on and since removed them, even without sp1, it runs sweet with just some of the updates fron the windows update sites

The size is about 130 MB for the install package. Once you start installing things tend to get rather bigger. Depends on what you retain/replace of an existing install.
