Sony BMG kills daft DRM CD rootkit scheme
SONY BMG has decided to kill its scheme to incorporate rootkits ("rotkits") on CDs from now on, according to Reuters.

The wire said that it will stop making CDs that incorporate rootkits, although it said it was only "temporarily suspending" the scheme in manufacturing.

Earlier this week the INQ reported that demented hackers were using the scheme to launch all sorts of nefarious attacks on PCs. That caused a flurry of activity from AV vendors to hit out, in ever such a mild way, against the idea. Yesterday. Even Microsoft reacted a little timidly. That is to say, hardly at all.

But Sony BMG will still have to contend with people that have already unwittingly installed these 'ere rotkits. Reuters didn't say whether Sony said anything about that, here. Sony is going to look again at its digital rights management policies. The INQUIRER is still waiting for Sony BMG to return its oft repeated calls.
