IBM has announced that it will end support for its venerable OS/2 operating system nearly 18 years after version 1.0 was released. The company is recommending that its users move on to more current operating systems such as Linux. Security updates and fixes will no longer be hosted on IBM's homepage after December of 2006, but during the migration period away from OS/2. IBM will continue to offer support from IBM Global Services. The cost of such support is not currently known, but it is not expected to come cheap.
