Texas Instruments is to bring live digital television broadcasts to mobile phones for the first time in a development that it claims could revolutionise the industry.
The phone chip is codenamed Hollywood, with the US technology giant claiming it will allow consumers to get their news and entertainment whenever and wherever they want.
Gilles Delfassy, Texas Instruments wireless terminals business unit senior vice president and general manger, said: "One by one, the industry's most exciting consumer electronics are being integrated into wireless handsets.
"With this new chip on the cellphone, users will enjoy digital, high-quality TV in real time."
Texas Instruments says picture quality from the chip will be 24-30 frames a second and may also be able to support pay-per view programming, interactive television and menu/guide systems.
