I have a 1024mb of ram ( 2x 512 simms)...during the boot the motherboard recognizes the proper amount but for some reason when i view the system properties only 256mb are displayed... I pulled one of the simms out and the properties still showed 256mb??

Any ideas?

thanks...for your help

Yes, get most recent update for your BIO's and flash it.

If that's not an option, buy a new motherboard or a new system for that matter.

May I ask why you need so much memory in a system so old? Once you reach about 500MB on an old system like that you often have more ram available than the slow CPU can ever need. You can get stuck in an upgrade circle that often costs you much more in the long run than just getting a new system in the first place.

Start, run, and msconfig and look through each tab for anything strange. Um thinking. Not sure what else to check besides taking memory out and try again or in another system.

Or check your memory with the attachment.

@ KC :
Not sure why you think of this as a very old system but it might have to do with the fact
that SIMM's was mentioned ?

That _has_ to be a typo... ?

http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=P4G8X&langs=01
gives this info regarding memory :
Quote:

Dual channel memory architecture
4 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 4GB PC2100/1600 ECC/non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory
The latest BIOS, P4G8X/P4G8X Deluxe BIOS 1006, can be found here :
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/downl...6g.zip~zaqwedc
and is dated 2003/06/24.

Are your 2 DIMM's identical ?

Absolutely...they are identical 512mb DDR dimms. There are in fact PC3200 which is greater that the specs suggest but when i replaced the single 512mb dimm 11 months ago everything seemed to be correct.

For interest sakes i installed the old single 512MB dimm and it too is only recognized as 256mb?

I'm running Windows XP with the latest updates (minus sp2)...

Sounds as if the motherboard doesn't like 512MB DIMMS. I have had this problem on some other motherboards, (older) which don't support those modules. However, I would have thought the mobo this new would do.

You tried in another system?

Have you checked any other way - e.g.\
Sandra or Everest? You can find the free version here:
