How do I backup/export all of my emails in Outlook express XP?
Whenever I try to use the export feature in it, it tells me something about an error while initializing the MAPI.
Thanks.

Depending on what you're going to import them to, the files that contain all the messages and folders in Outlook Express are in:
c:\docs and Settings\"user name"\local settings\App. Data\Identities\"{long hex. string}"\Microsoft\Outlook Express.
Those files can be imported into other mail apps. To be imported back into another install of OE, the destination PC has to have the same or higher SP/patch level on it's OE.
I tried doing the export on my PC, and it would seem you're getting the message because it doesn't detect Outlook or Exchange (MAPI clients), as you can only export to another MS email product thats already installed.

Just backup that whole mail folder and all the *.dbx files in it.
On the other system, update OE to the same version.
If the backup was on a CD, copy it to a temp folder and remove the read-only attributes. Then in OE, select: File\import\messages
Point it to the temp folder holding all the mail files and it will import it all into OE.

with that tool i get the following error when i try to restore my emails.
Error Copying File or Folder
Cannot Copy Folders: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open.
what does that mean? I managed to restore my inbox, but all of the subfolders won't restore and that is where the most important stuff was.

It seems to be a Windows error (1224), but I don't know what that is or why you're getting it. The freebie backup/restore works well in both directions for me. Sorry.

Try Genie Backup Manager 4.0. Works great. And about that error, maybe the file is in use. Sounds like it. Restart computer and do not open outlook express or anything. Just the backup app and see if it works.
You can also try to clean up. You know under options, maintance.
