This guy has a pretty good outline for disabling unneccesary servics in XP.

Blk Vipers site has been up for quite a while, he has updated it too, it a good starting point to disabling services you dont need or use and then hack the s*it out of your registry for good performance. I have a pIII600mhz that is hacked to death with 768mb ram and it is faster and more stable than most P3-P4 1ghz to 1.5ghz machines with 128 to 256 mb ram(not the newest but 6 mo to 1 year old machines).
