I think this has happenned to other folkz here b4...

Computer takes a LONG time to shut down; I do NOT have the "clear paging file on shutdown" enabled, so I know its not that..
Plus, even weirder, it take TWO times to shut down or to reboot EVERY TIME!!!

First time the maching just looks at you, when you click a second time, it shuts down on reboots as normal...

Trying to extend the time before the next formatting!!

it sounds like there's a service or program hanging when you try to shutdown, look in the event viewer and see if it lists anything, if not, try using msconfig and disabling different services to see if it gets better

try running bootviz too

I was havin a similar problem. I cleaned my reg with a reg cleaner and I did this

Havin' troubles with timeout ?
Open "RegEdit" and search for "AutoEndTask" and put it to "1"
(Default is set to "0", and it should apear at least 3 times!)

This helped me some. But My install on that computer is almost 2 years old. Lots of install/uninstall. I Hibernate becasue it is faster for me than shutting down. Also Instead when a program ask to shut down because something new was installed, Often I can get by with logging off instead of shutting down all the way.

Hope this helps

@phogphire; i had about 5 instances in the registry that needed to be changed, but it didnt help..
@Bads; yeah, that works well, but it isnt the way i like to shut down..it was fast though
@Seph;(aka thankubot post padder.LMFAO) I am sure that is the problem, but I have lots of services already either disabled or set to manual, so it may be tough to solve..I guess I should try this before the inevitable weekend formatting!

Thanks, all!

LMAO, that's me

I know the weekend format all too well, I had to completely format and reinstall my server last Sunday because my uncle rebooted it while I was asleep, and it ran chkdsk when it was booting again, and it was deleting invalid log entries in the MFT.... he thought it was deleting files like a virus or something and shut it off during the middle of it, needless to say when I woke up it wouldn't boot, I finally got it to boot after a while but most of the NTFS perms on drive C were way out of whack, so bad that most services wouldn't even start, so I said screw it and reinstalled everything, made a ghost image this time though
