Actually it is far worse than this.
Let's look at recent XEON chipsets and motherboards.
Intel's E7500 for example, requires pairs of DIMMs.
It requires that all parts used are same architecture/module layout, not just in each pair, but in the whole board.
So, the most common DDR 512MB and 256MB modules are what is called a "X8" layout.
