my dad recently bought an HP Pavilion 762N (P4 2.2), with onboard AC97 audio, that came installed with WinXP Home.....everything worked fine

today i created a new partition & installed WinXP PRO as dual-boot....install went smoothly, but i soon realized i wasn't getting any SOUND...did all the updates, checked drivers, volume slider levels, etc.....don't get any error messages, and Device Manager says everything is "working properly", but i still have a completely SILENT computer under XP Pro

anyone have any suggestions?....like i said, sound works fine under XP Home

My cousin has got the same onboard AC97 audio has got the same problem. Once a new installation is done, sound is not detected by Windows XP. We need to install drivers which came with the mobo's CD. After that sound works. But still occassionly, the sound doesn't work all of a sudden. And the only way to fix it, is simply rebooting. He is running Windows XP Pro too. From your post, I understand it is an issue with onboard AC97 audio and Windows XP.

wooohooo....fixed the problem....i used a "trick" suggested by a member of another forum.....when it came to install the AC97 sound driver, i pointed to the drive/partition ("C") that contained the original install of HP's XP Home....i guess the driver's that come with WinXP don't work with this system.....but all is fine now...thanks all for the input
