DON'T READ too much into the fact that Intel cancelled a press briefing about its up-and-coming Prescott chip which was due to be held later this week.
Generally speaking, the press are the last to know anything, if the VendorEngine gets its own way.
When we noted that samples were delayed, those are samples for journalists, and as the scum of the earth, we're right at the bottom of the food chain as far as the SpinningMachine is concerned. We're just here to print Intel's press releases.
In fact, and as we've reported here much earlier, Prescott will be formally launched on current estimates in the first week of February 2004, and will be in place in machines for the launch.
Estimated speeds for Prescotts, which are likely to be sold as Pentium 4s with Special Extensions are from 2.8GHz to 3.4GHz, and again as we've reported, Chipzilla will price the beasties so as to supersede P4s without special extensions as quickly as possible.
And worse than that, there's also likely to be a Prescott Extreme Edition released, based on the Gallatin exemplars.
We've heard of preliminary Prescott benchmarks too.
Say that you take a Pentium 4 3.2GHz hypertension capable chip with an 800MHz front side bus (FS

as representing 100. Then the Pentium 4 3.2GHz Prescott with hypertension enabled and an 800MHz FSB is 110, and a Pentium 4 3.2GHz Prescott hypertension Extreme Edition with an 800MHz FSB is 118.
Well, that's what we've heard, anyroadmap
