I want to set up web hosting for a friend on my computer with php and mysql and would like to install cpanel and run invision board from the site. I might be offering other accounts so everything needs to be secure and with quotas and statistics etc

I did it once before with IIS but can't remember how to do it now or thought that maybe there is a better way

Please can someone explain how to set it up and how to get a domain to forward to my ip, do I need dns?

Thanks

Hi robinwilson16,

For domain needs try godaddy.com. They're pretty cheap, decent service, and lot's of 'creative' plans that will probably suit your needs. As for cpanel, go to cpanel.net for more (but it ain't cheap! ).

All the best,

Thanks, I've managed to get IIS, php and mysql installed and configured and the invisionboard site is running well from my computer

The only problem now is that I need to asociate someone else's domain name with my computer's ip address and also want to set up another site but it's not letting me becasue it's saying that the ip address is already in use by another site running on this computer

How do I get around that?

You can see it working athttp://192.168.1.100 or it might behttp://192.168.1.1

I did try goaddy once but they wouldn't accept my uk credit card
It seems that cpanel is only for Linux although Ensim is for windows which is a similar thing but it isn't free

Sephiroth is an unknown quantity at this point

you need to edit your board url in invision board's config so that it is pointing to the public addy, not 192.168.1.*, and, you might want to look at cheap hosting somewhere, it's reaaaaly slow on your upload, even with just me visiting, i'd hate to see 20 or 30 people

Sephiroth makes a good point about finding a hosting plan. With most plans you can run multiple sites too, and then you don't have to worry about an IP range or DNS either. I've got some space at oktagone.net and I think they're great. They've got some fantastic plans right now (2Gb space/20Gb trans @$5/month or $50/year!!!) and they'll take PayPal . Nxsecure has some deals going now too, but frankly I'm not too impressed with their reliability lately. There's lots of good places around though so just run it up in Google .

All the best,
E3

Thanks for the ideas

And that hosting is cheap, but I was wanting to host someone else's site to get money for doing it. I am going to charge £5 a month to host it which he has agreed to. He is going to run a personal site which won't get very busy

I just need to get the domain working now. There is an option with no-ip but you have to pay for that. It's $25 a year I think

How do I use dns to set it up and get it working for free? And how would I run another site, I only have one ip address?

Thanks

You could run separate subwebs off your one IP, but if you want to run multiple domains you really need to contact your ISP to get additional IP's assigned. As for the DNS, it's probably a bit more than we could get into here. If you go into Windows Admin Tools>DNS>Help>Help Topics, it gives you pretty good step by step instructions though.

Good luck and keep those hosting service url's handy though. You could still host websites on a virtual server somewhere, and bill your customer directly too. Many hosts have a sort of 'reseller' program where you can make a few bucks (or quid ) that way. Sometimes that's easier and a lot less hassle, especially if you're only running a couple of sites.

All the best,
E3

Thanks I've tried the dns service in Windows Server 2003 but I'm not sure which value to give to my isp as a dns server or if I've set it up right

Could it be?
main-computer.teriva.com.

or
main-computer.ns1

Thanks
