They had a system like that for liveupdate since a long time, it just wasnt called activation.

As to when it could be bypassed - if the checks are done on the client side, I'd say a few days. If the liveupdate server verifies each key and doesnt send updates to invalid users, it simply wont be possible to bypass.

Can't imagine why Symantec would do a silly thing like that, what with NAV 2001, 2002, and 2003 easily gotten on P2P file sharing systems. Pretty soon you'll see a "Devil's Own" version of NAV too!

Can you imagine if all software starts doing this?
If there going to do product activation you know there going to use the hardware configuration to prevent people from using it on other systems.

It's not that bad for an operating system but can you imagine all the phone calls you would have to make to reactivate all your purchased software every time you upgrade your system?

Now you would have to call Microsoft, PowerQuest, and Symantec. Who knows how many it's going to be a year from now.

Since most of these products don't offer much of an upgrade (except to their own wallets!), I would only buy an upgrade when absolutely necessary. Everything I have works just fine, why upgrade?

People people,

Symantec have a lot of development put in their products. I everyone know the *big* difference between the versions 2001, 2002 and 2003. These major changes have to be developped and therefor paid. So just buy these products.

With Windows we don't really have an alternative, most of us dislike linux and variants. With virus scanners however we have a wide variaty of product that are sometimes even free. Let Symantec use product activation. Let us see them loose market, money, and their great name.

just mho.
