I did an XP update now I have a logon screen with my name next to it that I have to click to launch into desktop.

Can I bypass this like it used to a go straight into the desktop from boot?

yea there is actually an easy solution there... just go to your network identification in the my computer properties.. and select network ID. somewhere in there it should give you an option to always assume (username) is logging in, whether administrator or whoever u want to log in as. if i can remember correctly.. have fun.

Just go Start > Run > control userpasswords2
Untick: Users must enter User/Pass
When a Window pops up type your User/Pass

Tried that and when restarted I got a logon error message saying "unable to log on because of user restriction."*

When I clicked OK it took me directly to the screen where it asks me to click my username (the original problem) before loading up the desktop.

Excellent post Phogphire.

I would like to add some related information as well.

Why you should not run your computer as an administrator?

Running Windows 2000 or Windows XP as an administrator makes the system vulnerable to Trojan horses and other security risks. The simple act of visiting an Internet site can be extremely damaging to the system. An unfamiliar Internet site may have Trojan horse code that can be downloaded to the system and executed. If you are logged on with administrator privileges, a Trojan horse could do things like reformat your hard drive, delete all your files, create a new user account with administrative access, and so on.

You should add yourself to the Users or Power Users group. When you log on as a member of the Users group, you can perform routine tasks, including running programs and visiting Internet sites, without exposing your computer to unnecessary risk. As a member of the Power Users group, you can perform routine tasks and you can also install programs, add printers, and use most Control Panel items. If you need to perform administrative tasks, such as upgrading the operating system or configuring system parameters, then log off and log back on as an administrator.

If you frequently need to log on as an administrator, you can use the runas command to start programs as an administrator.

Thanks for all this help/advice but i'm still a litle unclear.

When I bought this machine it had XP Home pre-installed. When I started the machine up it just booted straight into the desktop. This is how I continued to use the machine. I have not used or created a password previously.

It was not until I did my last Windows update that I now have this screen that asks me to click my name to allow the machine to boot to the desktop so I not sure why or how my settings have been changed as i didn't do this.

Would the easiest way out of this be to do a system restore to before I did my last Windows update?
