What you describe does not mean you need a new HD. It sounds to me like you have completely messed up your installation. I have seen several of your posts now and it sounds like you need to do a Low Level Format (LLF). Then reinstall your OS and start from scratch.

Good luck!

It may be available via your BIOS. If not, check your drive manufacturer for a free download

Hope this helps some

When you scratch install the OS the chances are you are only going to do a standard reformat of the drive- not low level format it.

Do you know how to FDISK a drive?

I don't know how to FDISK but to do a LLF you need to find the make and model number of your HD. The go the manufacturers web site and down the correct disk utility. This will be a program you extract to a floppy so you can boot from it.

LLF will write all zeros to your HD including the MBR (master boot record). Then you will need boot floppies for Win9x or a bootable CD for win2k/XP. This is a rather drastic measure but your system seems really messed up and you can start all over in one day, or spend weeks trying to figure out what's wrong with it.

Before you attempt this...

1. Backup everything you can. Do you have a burner? Is it working?

2. Let us know when you get the disk utility for the HD.

3. Reply to this post and tell us what OS you are using and complete system specs.

I'll do my best to keep an eye on this thread.
