here's my situation:
i am trying to network two mach together
first i started out trying sygate home network software because it supports nat technology because i only had one nic in both machines.
the machine that is runing win98SE can see the machine running XP and dl files from it but the box running XP could not see or communicate with the box running win98SE.
so i went and bought another nic and put two nic's in the xp box, connected to the internet on one card and connected the other box to the second nic and it don't work period! it sees the second nic but reports that is is unconnected in my system tray but it is plugged into the other box?
i don't know shit about this so any help would be greatly appriciated

I guess a lot of things can go wrong. The first few things that come to my mind is:
Did you buy a card that comes with good working xp drivers? If it looks like it is properly installed you can verify that by using it for the internet connection instead of nic #1. If it work we know tha hard- and software both machines work properly.
Have you changed the way the machines are connected to each other? Ie is there a hub or switch between them, was it the same way before you bought nic #2 and do you use a proper working cable?

If you can see your XP box from 98 it sounds as if your NIC's are working. On your 98 machine have you setup file and printer sharing ? You can find it via control panel / network settings.
Add protocal m/s file and printer sharing. Then go to My Computer and right click your drives. you should see an item for sharing
you can select the share properties for each drive / folder as you require. From memory I had something simmillar when I started.
Depending what name you log onto your 98 mc with you may or may-not have access to XP , there are settings you can change but just at the moment I cant recall where.

i am setting this up from scratch.
i have tried connecting the 2 boxes both ways directly and through a hub.
from what i have read is it will work both ways.
if i connect my modem to the hub first and then hook the 2 boxes up to 2 ports on the hub both boxes can share the internet connection but the boxes aren't networked together.
which pretty much defeats the goal i am trying to achive.
i have even tried to make it work os to os (i.e; 98SE to 98SE)and it still won't work
i have been fucking with this bullshit for about a week and it is really starting to piss me off!!
by the way i am using a 3 com LinkBuilder TP/8

So the situation is that both (one XP and one win98) computers work, their nics works and they can both reach Internet throw your hub (and then by the modem).
There is a pretty good step-by-step guide for this, and also a troubleshooter (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...ot_network.htm).

Can you ping each other from both PCs? If yes, then your nic are fine.

Here is from what I learned on Win2000. It doesn't like to comunicate with Win9x machine in pure TCP/IP network. You can install NetBeui protocal on both of your PCs. Make sure you unbind TCP/IP over NetBeui (http://grc.com) on both machine. Disable NetBeui over TCP/IP. In order words, you use NetBeui for your LAN as file/printer sharing and TCP/IP for Internet.

Put your XP CD cd into your cd drive go to: value addedMSFTNETNETBEUI

Read the text file and it will instruct you on the installation of the netbeui protocol.

Hope this helps!!
