Greenpeace unfair
A CHEMICAL industry group has accused Greenpeace of beating up claims that the iPhone is packed full of dangerous chemicals.
Last week, Greenpeace hit the headlines saying that the iPhone was a toxic waste slick and it was planning to surround its Cappuccino headquarters with people in rubber rafts.
However the Bromine Science and Environmental Forum (BSEF), which is the international organisation of the bromine chemical industry, said that none of the substances Greenpeace is moaning about in the iPhone are banned under existing environmental laws.
In fact, if they were banned then a lot of electronic gear would also be out of the shops. The brominated flame retardants provide a high level of fire safety and prevent the things from catching fire.
The BSEF said that Greenpeace did not say which brominated flame retardants are present in the iPhone because it does not know. So it just spread a bit of FUD on a piece of speculation.
However most brominated flame retardants cannot be released into the environment.
In short, Greenpeace just said it for the press release.
