If you've ever felt as though you can't keep up with the pace of life, well, it could have been worse. You could have been a computer disk.

The history of removable disks is one sad "couldn't keep up" story after another. Remember the floppy disk (http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-6154956-7.html) (800KB)? The SyQuest cartridge (44MB)? The Zip disk (100MB)? The Jaz disk (1GB)? The recordable DVD (4.7GB)?

Each one seemed at first like a handy system for making backups and transporting files. But as computer hard drives (http://news.com.com/The+hard+drive+a...3-6112782.html) grew, those removable disks wound up looking pathetically puny.
