New NV44-based GPU gives another chance to GeForce 6200
Graphics cards featuring Nvidia's new GeForce 7100 GS graphics processor unit (GPU), which was recently added to the company's entry-level product lineup, will hit the market in the middle of September, according to sources at Taiwan-based graphics card makers. The GeForce 7100 GS uses the NV44 core, which is currently known as implemented in Nvidia GeForce 6200 GPUs featuring TurboCache technology, and there is also a way to upgrade the GeForce 6200 with TurboCache to the GeForce 7100 GS, indicated the sources.The new GPU also supports TurboCache technology that helps graphics card makers reduce costs by allowing a GPU to render directly to system memory, instead of utilizing on-board memory on a graphics card. Positioning it as supplementing the forthcoming Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium operating system, Nvidia aims the GeForce 7100 GS to compete with the ATI Radeon X1300CE, the sources indicated.
