From my experience working on DVD players, if they are broken to the point they don't see the disc at all your looking at a new pick-up assembly and re-alighnment at the least wich can run a little over $120 sometimes..... Depends on make, model, etc.... But, point being as far as concumer models go it's really cheaper to just buy a new one....
