Ubisoft swamped with Starforce complaints
DRM maker dumped

YESTERDAY we recounted how staff at Ubisoft were telling their mates that the company was planning to dump the controversial DRM maker Starforce.

Today, it seems that Ubisoft has made the matter official and filed for divorce from the business relationship.

The fact that the company was last month slapped with a $5 million lawsuit by gamers who claimed that Starforce's DRM system compromised the security of their PCs, might have gone a long way to helping it make that decision. Ubisoft says that it is still investigating that complaint.

According to Gamespot, here, Ubisoft is using an alternative copy protection system in all its upcoming releases. This means that Starforce will not be used in Heroes of Might and Magic V. It has been a bad year for Starforce. Last month, one of its employees was accused of posting a link to some cyberplace where users could illegally download Stardock's space-sim Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. It also lost a contract with Aspyr Media for its Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars game.
