they can't fire you for not being able to sleep! you weren't feeling good, slept all day because of that, and then at night, since you slept all day couldn't sleep at night. So logically you tried to kill some time to tire yourself out. All you have to say is "when you sleep all day and can't sleep at night, dont you get up and kill some time before you go back to bed?" I wouldn't worry about it just tell him straight up that you couldn't sleep.
I work at a hospital also, they CANNOT fire you for not being able to sleep because you were recovering from an illness and were afraid to come to work so you went to the MD Office, you could've gotten more people sick by being at work! In my opinion you did them a favor by not being there, because you weren't a liability to the patients or other employees. I think they should be thanking you for being so curtious!

If he gives you a hard time about it, call you attorney general's office and report him for harrassment, make sure you email or tell the head of the department also (if he is the head, make sure you go above him if he rides you about this)
working for a hospital is a job and an honor you get to see patients and employees, and its just a great job I love working at Duke Medical Center, its fun and well never a dull moment!
