Hold it... Can we try some simple logic?
The boot floppy is old and well proven. It is used for booting the computer and at the same time loading Ghost 2003. In that process something bad happens. Why should any Microsoft update (or any content of the hard drive) be of concern here? There are two parameters only: the hardware and the boot floppy.
Do the following:
Try the boot floppy with another computer. Does it work? Then you have a hardware problem with your (first) computer. Do you get the same problem as described above once again? Then get rid of the floppy and make a new one from your backup.
