Carry On Smurfing
A SURVEY conducted by image detection company PixAlert and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (or CIPD) has found out that as little as 70% of UK companies have taken action against porn on company computers.
The survey discovered that just over half of the senior managers questioned hadn't a clue about the legal implications of "inappropriate" images in the workplace. Unless, of course, they work for one of the web's thousands of porn sites.
A not-so-shocking two in three companies haven't kept their "Computer Acceptable Usage Policy" up to date, says the survey, which could potentially result in civil or criminal claims.
Companies also have a lot of trouble defending themselves against lewd pictures that find their way in on memory sticks, DVDs, CDs, digicams and camera phones. CIPD adviser Imogen Haslam is dead against porn in the workplace: "Many people may view some inappropriate computer images as a bit of harmless fun," she says, "but this isn't about sparing blushes." It's not? What is it about then, Imogen? She reckons dodgy pictures can lead to "offensive or even illegal images" finding their way into an organisation. And they won't want that.
