Here at Thomson/Technicolor in Camarillo, CA, we just installed the largest i5 (formerly called the AS/400) sold by IBM on the West Coast, at 1.5 Million US$. It's a i570 with 4 8-way Power5 processors with 4 more on the way, 2 GB memory with another 2GB coming, and 4.2TB of 35GB/15K SCSI disks. The processors are logically partitioned (LPAR'ed) into 4 separate systems which service the whole Thomson enterprise worldwide. The system it just replaced was contained in 18 refrigerator-sized cabinets, now it's only 5 cabinets. In 1998 at another company, we upgraded an AS/400 from CISC technology to RISC based PowerPC chips. One program that used to take 45 minutes to run only took 3 minutes with the new RISC box. Also, the newer iSeries is capable of running Linux and Win2K Server, among others, besides it's own i5-OS/400 operating system. It's FAST too!
