When you change boards you must use the same chipset manufacturer in order for it to work without a reinstall. If you notice while the drivers load in safe mode, XP loads drivers specifically to support the chipset you are currently using. In our computer shop, I ghost generic clones for each Intel, Via and SIS chipsets.
If you go past the recovery console, and actually in to the setup like your doing a clean install, you should receive an option to repair the existing installation.
