This is of course different to every router. Your router must not only accept the connectio on port 3389, if it is in NAT mode it must also forward that incoming connection to the (LAN/Private) ip address of the pc you want to connect to.
You can save and edit the *.rdp file that is created by the RDP client software, so that it uses the correct port, specify wether or not you want to connect to the console (in case of a W2K3 server) and even the name and password can be saved.
