I'm getting about a hundred spam emails a day

Some have @microsoft.com extensions saying "patch windows now" with an attached exe which is a virus, before you get infected. How is this possible?

And some are from paypal @paypal.com saying I have to enter my user id and password in the boxes in a reply or they will terminate my account and loads of others that get past the spam filters by using $ instead of S and @ instead of a.

Is spam really that effective for advertising?
