Like Unicorn said, "Norton protected" is like a second recycle bin.
To see whats in it you need to right click on the recycle bin and select "properties".
Under the recycle bin tab, choose "Double clicking opens all protected files".
To disable it go to the "Norton Protection" tab, hit the button to empty protected files, then uncheck the box "enable protection".
You may be suprised at all the junk in there and how much space it was taking.
