The necessity of doing a backup was drilled into my head from my first days of being a computer operator. It has saved me a few times. Once I had to ask a C.F.O. I worked for to get off a system (IBM AS/400) I was about to run a backup for. He wasn't real happy about it, but he grudgingly logged off. Later that month, we had a disk failure on the system's "load source" disk, equivalent to a boot disk on a PC. Having a recent good backup, we got the new disk installed, re-installed the O.S., apps, and data in time for payroll! A week later, I see a two boxes in our office with brand new 486 PCs (1993) inside! Also, I never again had to ask that C.F.O. to logoff for the backup!
